Andrew is at the forefront of intellectual property and civil litigation work in New Zealand. An Auckland and Oxford-educated former Rhodes Scholar, he has been at the independent  bar since 1998. Formerly he was a litigation partner at Russell McVeagh.

Intellectual Property Specialist

As a specialist in intellectual property, Andrew has handled extensive litigation in the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court – as well as numerous cases in the Trade Mark and Patent Office (IPONZ).  Chambers Asia Pacific states that Andrew “is well known for IP and IT litigation and is widely viewed as an authority in these areas.” Andrew has wide-ranging experience in copyright, patent, trade mark and trade secrets litigation – along with experience in trade mark applications and oppositions and branding advice and strategies.   He regularly handles interim injunction and other applications for urgent relief.

Advisor on Copyright and Licensing Issues

Andrew has also advised extensively on copyright and licensing issues and has done considerable work in the fields of music and sound recording copyright, publishing and before the Copyright Tribunal.

He has published a leading text on intellectual property and is the New Zealand editor of the Intellectual Property Reports (Lexis Nexis) as well as publishing regular updates on intellectual property in the New Zealand Law Review  and IP Forum. His website www.andrewbrown.co.nz is widely consulted and contains a substantial volume of case notes and articles on intellectual property.

Andrew was a previous Australasian President of IPSANZ and serves on the New Zealand committee. He is Chair of Experts for the .nz domain name disputes panel and is also on the WIPO UDRP panel.
