Kit is one of the leading employment lawyers in New Zealand. After 18 years as a litigation partner in Wellington firms, he joined the Independent Bar in 1990 and moved to Auckland in 1992. He specialises in civil and commercial litigation; employment, sports, and criminal law; and arbitration and mediation.

Kit's litigation experience includes frequent appearances in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal; Labour and Employment Courts; and the Employment Tribunal and Employment Relations Authority, on behalf of employees, employers, employer organisations and unions. He has conducted civil and commercial litigation in all New Zealand courts; appeared as senior counsel in major criminal trials for both the prosecution and defence in the High Court and District Courts; and has substantial appellate experience in the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal and High Court (in civil and criminal matters), and in the Employment Court.

Kit has accepted numerous appointments as an arbitrator and mediator in employment and other civil disputes. He is an adviser to television and radio producers and broadcasters on defamation and broadcasting standards. He also provides strategic advice to major corporations and government departments on employment issues, including contract negotiation; restructuring; termination of employment; and legislative compliance, and advises commercial and not-for-profit organisations on governance issues. Kit Toogood QC’s sports law practice includes advising national and provincial sports organisations and representing players before disciplinary tribunals.

His experience is reflected in the numerous papers and presentations he has made to conferences in New Zealand and overseas, and he has published key textbooks in his specialist areas.

Kit is a member of the Prosecutor Panel for the Serious Fraud Office. He is a former Deputy Chairperson of the New Zealand Sports Tribunal, and was formerly Vice-President of the New Zealand Bar Association. He holds or has held chairmanships of several major performing arts organisations.
