John is a construction law specialist, arbitrator, commercial mediator and adjudicator, with a particular interest in infrastructure development.

John was admitted to the New Zealand Bar in 1984, and practised in Wellington, London, Hong Kong, and since 1995, in Auckland, where he was a partner with national firm Buddle Findlay. John went to the bar in 2003.

John's experience is in non-contentious construction law, and dispute management and avoidance in major construction projects. He has advised all participants in all major industry sectors, including energy, water & wastewater, transportation, telecommunications, health, local government development, property development, heavy engineering and the marine industry.

John advises on contracting strategies, procurement processes (including selecting appropriate forms of contract and allocations of risk, drafting tender procedures and contract documents), contract management, and he arbitrates, mediates and adjudicates construction disputes. He is familiar with all standard forms and the approaches to one-off, tailor made contracts, from the traditional employer design and contractor construct approach (in the FIDIC, ICE, JCT, RIBA, NZS3910 & NZIA forms), and single point of responsibility design and construct (FIDIC, ICE, NEC3) through to more imaginative approaches which may include early contractor involvement, collaborative working arrangements, alliances and finance driven delivery strategies like public private partnerships (PPPs) and build-own-operate-transfer franchises (BOOTs).

John is a Fellow of AMINZ (he is on the panel of mediators and adjudicators), a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, a Principal Adjudicator for Building Disputes Tribunal, a Member of the Institute of Directors and a Member of the NZ Chapter of the Society of Construction Law.
