Philip Skelton

One of the top names in commercial litigation, Philip draws on 14 years as a Russell McVeagh partner, supported by two years experience in Britain and degrees from Auckland and Oxford.

As counsel, his work is commonly associated with companies of scale and prominence, including Telecom, NZ Steel, Auckland International Airport, Ports of Auckland, Sky City and Tyco. Philip's areas of special expertise include relationship disputes and employment law. Relationship disputes are typically disputes between shareholders, partners and joint venturers. For example, he represented a joint venture partner at the Privy Council on a dispute over pre-emptive rights, and acted for Sky City and Aspinall in litigation over the sale of Aspinall's shareholding in the Christchurch Casino.

In the area of employment law Philip advises numerous large manufacturing and infrastructure companies on collective bargaining issues and other employment-related litigation. As an example, he acted for Telecom on a class action brought by ex-employees alleging work-related injuries. He is also, it should be noted, a past convener of the Auckland District Law Society Employment Law Committee.
