Tom Weston QC

Tom Weston QC has practiced for 30 years as a commercial litigator throughout New Zealand. He has appeared at all levels before the New Zealand Courts. His specialist area of interest is competition law and regulation but, as a commercial litigator, he has expertise in companies and securities law, the law of trusts, professional liability, insurance, and building disputes.

Most recently, he has conducted a lengthy High Court trial in Auckland which eventually settled having run for eleven months out of a scheduled sixteen months.

Mr Weston also sits as an arbitrator and has conducted many meditations of commercial disputes.

He has written extensively in his areas of interest including in the New Zealand Law Journal. He was an author of Sims High Court Practice for fifteen years. He has presented papers at many conferences (insurance, commercial regulation, competition law etc).

Mr Weston has been on the panel of prosecutors for the Serious Fraud Office for over ten years and has conducted several multi-week jury trials on behalf of the Office.

Tom Weston QC was appointed a Queens Counsel in 1999. He was appointed a part-time Judge of the High Court and Court of Appeal of the Cook Islands in 2006.

He has held a number of professional positions including as a member of the Rules Committee (responsible for setting the rules of the various New Zealand courts) for six years. He convened the NZLS Civil Litigation Committee for three years and was a member of that Committee for a total of nine years.
