Together with Jim Farmer QC, Suzanne Robertson represented Margaret Spencer in her claim for compensation for discrimination under the Human Rights Act. Margaret Spencer claimed for loss suffered from the Government‚ policy on family carers which prevented Mrs Spencer being paid to care for her disabled son. Mrs Spencer legal battle has seen her endure two hearings in the High Court and a hearing in the Court of Appeal. This is an important decision in New Zealand human rights history as it is the first case in which a court has awarded damages for discrimination under a Government policy or practice.
