Bankside Singapore Coordinator David Grief has been appointed to the Host Committee for the American Society of International Law (ASIL) Abroad Meeting, being held in Singapore on 3–4 September.
The American Society of International Law (ASIL) was founded in 1906 and chartered by Congress in 1950. ASIL promotes the study and use of international law to support global relations grounded in law and justice.
With around 4,000 members, across nearly 100 countries, the Society’s members include attorneys, academics, corporate counsel, judges, representatives of governments and non-governmental organisations, international civil servants, students, and others interested in international law.
“ASIL’s first overseas meeting in Switzerland was a roaring success, so they decided to have one in Asia-Pacific.” says David. “I was honoured to be asked to help them with their Singapore Abroad Meeting.”
ASIL’s Singapore Meeting includes keynote addresses by leading figures in international law, Ambassador-at-Large Tommy Koh, who served as Singapore's Permanent Representative to the United Nations between 1968 and 1971, and Ambassador Rena Lee, current Singapore candidate for the International Court of Justice (2027–2036).
Other high-profile speakers include Professor Chester Brown, a leading figure in public international law, Sir Daniel Lincoln Bethlehem KCMG KC, barrister and former Legal Adviser to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom government, and Joan Donoghue, former US State Department official, and former president of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The programme features a diverse range of panels on key areas of international law, with topics spanning human rights and criminal justice (“The Arc and Future of International Criminal Law – From the Rome Statute to the Crimes against Humanity Treaty” and “Technology and Human Rights”), dispute resolution (“Compulsory Mediation for International Disputes” and “Investment Arbitration Today”), AI and technology (“AI, Commerce, and Intellectual Property: Navigating a Changing Landscape”), environment and sustainable development (“Global Climate Action in the Trump 2.0 Era”), international organisations and global governance (“Multilateralism Under Strain: Diplomacy in a Divided World”), and more.
“The seminars are outstanding and highly topical,” says David. “It’s an unmissable opportunity for New Zealand legal practitioners in international law.”
