For over twenty five years Christine has practised exclusively as a commercial litigator, specialising in insurance, construction and employment disputes.

Authorised by the New Zealand Law Society to accept direct instructions.

Insurance Law

Christine’s insurance law practice has resulted in her being involved in a diverse range of litigation from contractual, negligence and Fair Trading Act claims, to professional indemnity defence work for lawyers, accountants and engineers, income protection and personal disability claims and leaky building disputes.

Her time practising at Bell Gully, where she was a litigation partner from 1995-2008 saw her involved in the  broad range of commercial litigation undertaken by one of New Zealand’s leading law firms.

Recent and Notable Cases

Christine is an accomplished advocate, having lead trials in the District and High Court and appeared in the Court of Appeal (both in New Zealand and Samoa) and the Privy Council. Her employment law practice has involved her appearing in both the Employment Tribunal and the Employment Court. Practising construction law has involved Christine in a number of major arbitration.

A list of the cases in which she has appeared as counsel is;

Body Corporate 326421 & Ors v Auckland Council & Ors (The Nautilus) [2105] NZHC 862

Christine acted as senior counsel for the plaintiffs in these proceedings which resulted in the highest award of damages to date in a leaky building case in favour of the plaintiff owners.


Percy v Sovereign Assurance Company Ltd [2014] NZHC 1573

Successful defence of claim against insurer under Income Protection Policy for a total disability benefits.


Nisha Alim v LSG Sky Chefs New Zealand Limited [2015] NZEmpC 139

Personal grievance claim arising in context of employee transfer under Part 6A of the Employment Relations Act defended. Significant discussion of what amounts to a ‘sham’ in the context of employment relationships.

Successfully opposed application for leave to appeal Employment Court decision. [2015] NZCA 359


Kelly Family trust v Lasque Construction Ltd & Signature Residential Ltd [2015] NZHC 1957

An important decision for franchisors and franchisees in the construction industry, dealing with questions of liability of related companies for breeches of original building contract which resulted in a failure to achieve Code compliance.


Parkin v Vero Insurance NZ Ltd [2015] NZHC 1675

Successful defence for insurer of claim arising from Christchurch earthquake sequence, reaffirming the nature and basis of insurer’s obligations in respect of repair/re-instatement of earthquake damage to residential property.
