Prior to joining Bankside, Jason practised at Russell McVeagh.
Jason is a highly experienced commercial advocate with a focus on High Court and appellate litigation.
He graduated from the University of Auckland with numerous awards, including a senior scholarship in law for graduating second in his year and prizes for twice winning the University’s top advocacy competition. Prior to commencing practice as a barrister in 2009, Jason clerked for Sir Peter Blanchard in the Court of Appeal, and was a litigator at Russell McVeagh and Slaughter & May(London).
Jason practises across the full range of commercial litigation, but has particular expertise in banking and insurance litigation, insolvency, professional negligence, trust and property disputes. He has acted for many corporate clients and public companies including Vector, Westpac, Calibre Partners, Fletcher Building, PGG Wrightson, New Zealand Treasury, Maurice Blackburn, Itochu Corporation, Pyne Gould Corporation, Lloyd’s syndicates, Spark, global insurance brokerage Willis, and litigation funders.
Jason has acted for clients in most of New Zealand’s largest class action cases, including in the CBL, Southern Response, and James Hardie actions.
He also acts for clients in investigations and proceedings initiated by the Serious Fraud Office and Financial Markets Authority.
Jason is a regular speaker at Law Society conferences and has written a number of published academic articles. He is also an editor of leading texts on property law, including Hinde McMorland & Sim Land Law in New Zealand.
CBL Corporation Limited (in liquidation) (Current)
Acting for the liquidators of the publicly listed insurance company, CBL Corporation, in one of New Zealand’s largest corporate insolvencies. Jason is lead counsel defending CBL Corporation in two shareholder class actions and proceedings brought by the Financial Markets Authority, and advancing separate proceedings against CBL Corporation’s directors. In total, the claims across these proceedings are likely to exceed $300 million.

Acting for Westpac in a $50 million civil fraud claim.
Bank of New Zealand v George Kerr & Others (Current)
Acting for high-profile investor George Kerr in the defence of a $65 million claim by the Bank of New Zealand.
Pyne Gould Corporation v Bath Street Capital (2021)
Acting for Pyne Gould Corporation in a $22 million claim against Bath Street Capital relating to a financing dispute. The case settled in 2021.
Energy Securities LP v Vector Limited (2019)
Successfully defending the publicly listed utilities company Vector in a securities claim.
Ngāti Whātua Holdings Ltd v Jordan & Ors (2019)
Acting for the board of directors of a major fisheries company to successfully resist an injunction preventing the sale of a $90 million business.
Apia Construction & Engineering Ltd v Samoa National Provident Fund (2017)
Defending a substantial construction arbitral award against the Samoan Government from challenge.
BDL v CB (Sir Bernard Rix, Hon. W Brazil, N Kaplan QC, 2017)
Acting with American attorneys for a New Zealand distributor in an international arbitration appeal held in California.
Chambers Asia Pacific 2022 recorded Jason’s “significant body of financial services-related work and significant experience at High Court and Court of Appeal level”. It recorded he was “the recipient of extensive and highly positive comment from interviewees”, noting his “articulate and persuasive advocacy" and that he was "one of the brightest talents at the junior Bar [barristers yet to take silk]: super bright, super hard-working and an outstanding, absolutely first-class barrister".
