Bankside Singapore has partnered with the Singapore Academy of Law (SAL) to deliver the inaugural Cross-examination Competition, designed to give young lawyers a rare opportunity to develop and showcase their cross-examination skills in a realistic courtroom setting. We speak with Bankside Singapore member Dr Anna Kirk about the partnership and the exciting opportunity for young lawyers to win a two-week placement at our Auckland chambers.
Hi Anna, tell us more about the Competition.
This is a competition to hone and practise cross-examination skills and get feedback from some of the profession’s leading advocates and judges. We know it can be difficult for younger practitioners to get advocacy experience, so this is a fantastic opportunity to practise those skills in a supportive environment.
The competition will feature a series of structured rounds involving live witnesses, assessors, and moderators. Participants will be assessed on their cross-examination technique, advocacy skills, and overall performance. The moot problem and supporting materials will be released to all registered participants on 4 May.
Who can apply?
The competition is open to lawyers and legal service officers in Singapore with up to six years’ post-qualification experience. Applicants may enter individually or as part of the same firm or organisation.
Participants who have completed the Junior Lawyers Professional Cross-Examination and Experts module are eligible to progress directly to the semi-finals.
Why have Bankside Singapore and SAL come together to offer this Competition?
Bankside Singapore is committed to supporting the Singapore legal community, including its emerging practitioners. SAL’s strong focus on professional excellence and its wide range of programmes for lawyers at every stage of their careers made this a natural partnership.
We are delighted to offer this exceptional advocacy training opportunity for Singapore-based lawyers.
What is the opportunity for the winning candidate?
The winner will receive a two-week placement with Bankside Singapore barristers in Auckland, including return economy flights from Singapore to Auckland, accommodation, and a daily per diem.
The first and second runners-up will also receive a prize.
