Bankside is delighted to welcome commercial barrister Mike Colson KC to its set.

Admitted to the bar in 1991, Mike began his career at Bell Gully. He spent two years with Herbert Smith in London before returning to Bell Gully, where he was a litigation partner from 2001 to 2017. He joined the independent bar in 2017 and was appointed silk in 2021.

Mike’s expertise spans commercial and public law, including insolvency, property, negligence, energy, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi matters. He acts both for and against the Crown, including in constitutional challenges to government legislation.

He has appeared in the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court in a number of cases including Ross Asset Management Limited, Kawarau Falls Station, the CBL class action, and the Ngāi Tahu freshwater case.

“Mike is a highly regarded commercial barrister,” says Bankside Board Chair Philip Skelton KC. “We are delighted that he has joined our set and will practice from both Auckland and Wellington.”

Mike holds a LLB and BCA (Accounting) from Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington. He has lectured in banking law at Victoria University.
